Genesis and Growth of Indian Society of Animal Production and Management
In the late seventies /early eighties of the previous century, a new branch of Animal science, Animal Production and Management was conceptualized to give emphasis on Management of Animal Production System with particular emphasis on commercial livestock farming. In order to shape up the domain of this new branch of science an ICAR workshop on "Methodology of teaching, research and extension in Animal Production and Management" was held at Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology, Bhubaneswar from 18th to 21st August 1982. The Workshop offered valuable recommendations on the concept and scope of the discipline, undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, domain of research, extension programmes in the ambit of Animal Production and Management as well as guidelines for organization and management of livestock farms.
The said workshop was attended by teachers /scientists of various State Agricultural Universities and National Institutes who were engaged in teaching, research and extension of Animal Production and Management and allied branches of science. The workshop paved the way to create separate department/division for Animal Production and Management in Veterinary Faculties/Colleges under State Agricultural Universities and in National Institutes. The pioneer torchbearers of this branch of science felt to promote a platform so that they could interact among themselves for betterment of the subject. This gave birth to the Indian Society of Animal Production and Management, which was duly registered as a society in 1983 at the Department of Animal Production, Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology, Bhubaneswar. By virtue of relentless effort of the society the JRF and SRF fellowships of ICAR were instituted to encourage the students to pursue master's and doctoral research programmes in this branch of science. A quarterly research journal 'Indian Journal of Animal Production and Management' the mouthpiece of the Society was simultaneously launched from Department of Livestock Production and Management, Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar. This journal was very soon recognized as one of the important research journal in livestock science particularly facilitating the publication of research findings in the areas of Animal Production and Management and allied branches of science. Till date 32 Volumes of the Journal have been published. A special issue of the Journal was published commemorating the International Conference on Buffalo organised at New Delhi in December, 1988. At present the journal is published half yearly. It has a NAAS rating of 3.2 and articles can be uploaded through www.ijapm.org
As on today the society has more than twelve hundred life members, some of them are also held from abroad.
