ANNA UNIVERSITY

Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a Unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and Allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. The University has four campuses namely

  • College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) (1794)
  • Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet (MIT) (1949)
  • Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (1944)
  • School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) (1957)

All the campuses are located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India. Anna University main campus CEG is situated in the southern part of the city of Chennai, extended over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The MIT campus at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the Anna University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. Since December 2001, it has become a large, highly renowned Affiliated University, having brought into its fold more than 600 Self-financing Engineering Colleges including Government Colleges and Government-Aided Engineering Colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu State.

UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research, Anna University was reaccredited by NAAC in the year 2014 with A grade. Many of the departments of Anna University have been accredited by NBA. Recently in 2017, in the National Institutional ranking Framework (NIRF) system launched by MHRD, New Delhi, Anna University has achieved 6th rank in the University level, 8th rank in the Engineering Colleges level and 13th rank in the overall category.

Department of Manufacturing Engineering

The Department of Manufacturing Engineering is a multifaceted, dynamic and quality conscious with a glorious past and continuing saga of success and achievements. Its strength is contributed by highly qualified faculty, brilliant students, and state of the art infrastructure via classroom, library, modern laboratories, etc.  The Department of Manufacturing Engineering has obtained sponsored projects from various funding agencies namely DST, BRNS, UGC, FIST, TEQIP, etc.

The Department of Manufacturing Engineering provides the excellent environment for teaching research and learning. It has produced outstanding alumni. Its faculty is involved in research in the field of CAD/CAM/CIM/ROBOTICS, metal cutting, non-traditional machining, micromachining, electronics manufacturing, additive manufacturing, composite materials, etc.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest departments of College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), as well as in the country. It is established in the year 1894 and provides excellent learning and research opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students, in addition to providing consultancy services to the multiple industries.

The broad areas of the Department of Mechanical Engineering include Design, Manufacturing, Energy and Thermal Sciences. It has excellent experimental and computational facilities, such as Combustion Analysers, Climatic Chambers, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), CAD/CAM/CAE Software tools, etc. Faculty members are engaged in active research with partners from Government establishments and industries. The Department’s research projects are primarily funded by the UGC, DST, MNRE, AICTE and other governmental agencies and many industries.

The Department has multiple divisions namely AU-FRG Institute for CAD/CAM, Central Workshop, Engineering Design, Internal Combustion Engineering, Institute for Energy Studies and Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning.

Department of Production Technology

The Department of Production Technology offers B.Tech in Production Engg & ME in Manufacturing Engg and Mechatronics Engg. It also offers part-time UG programs in the areas of Mechanical Engg, Production Engg & PG program in Manufacturing Engineering. For the first time in our country, a PG program in M.E Mechatronics was started in the year 1999. The Department of Production Technology carried out many research projects, which are primarily funded by the UGC, DST and other governmental agencies as well as many industries.
