Prof. M. K. SURAPPA
Prof. M. K. Surappa, born on 5th Dec. 1951 in an agricultural family in Mirle, in Mysore District. He completed his school education in Mirle in Kannada medium Government. schools. He obtained BSc degree (1970) from Yuvaraja's College of Mysore University. He joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1970 and received BE degree in Metallurgy in 1973, M.S and Ph. D degrees from the faculty of Engineering in 1976 and 1980 respectively. Prof. Surappa joined then newly established Regional Laboratory, Trivandrum in 1979 as senior scientist and worked there for two years. During 1981-87, he was Research Associate/Engineer at Drexel University (USA), Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge (UK) and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Switzerland). He returned to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as an Assistant Professor in 1987 and rose to the position of Professor in 1998. He was Honorary Secretary of Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology during 2004-09. He was Visiting Professor to Sir M. Visveswaraya Chair, University of Mysore (2003-04). He has served as Founder Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar for a period of six years (2009-15). He served as Dean, Faculty of Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science during the year 2016-2017. He assumed the post of Vice Chancellor of Anna University on 12th April 2018. He is also Honorary Professor at the Indian Institute of Science. Prof. Surappa has made outstanding R&D contributions to the Science and Technology of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs). For over three decades, he has pursued many innovative investigations on synthesis, processing-microstructure-property correlation and application development of MMCs based on light alloy matrices. These include : (a) Development of "Stir Cast Process" for the fabrication of aluminium matrix composites. Process developed by Prof. Surappa at the Indian Institute of Science is often hailed as an Indian Innovation by MMC producers across the world. (b) Development of innovative technique for synthesis of metal-ceramic nano composites by in-situ pyrolysis of polymer pre-cursors in the liquid melt. He has carried out all his research work entirely in India. Prof. Surappa has published 100 research papers in International journals and presented nearly 150 papers in national and international conferences and has authored a book. He has secured one US and 3 Indian patents. Prof. Surappa nurtured IIT Ropar as an Institution of Excellence in Research and Governance. In the 2016 National Ranking of Institutions, IIT Ropar stands number 9 amongst top 100 Engineering Institutions. It is very heartening to note that IIT Ropar ranked number one in two parameters used in ranking exercise, namely (a) Teaching, learning and Resources (TLR) and (b) Graduation Outcome (GO) amongst 16 IITs. This is testimony to the inspiring, dynamic and visionary leadership of Prof. Surappa. Professor was bestowed with Sir. M. Visvesvaraya award for his Life time contributions in Science and Technology from the Government of Karnataka for the year 2015. Prof. Surappa is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). In the year 2015, Karnataka State Open University honored him by awarding him Honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt). He received Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava Award by the Government of Karnataka in 2006 and Prof. Rustum Choksi Award for Excellence in Research and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 2007. He received AMULYA Award for Innovation in 2012 by the Government of Karnataka. He has been bestowed with Metallurgist of the Year award for the year 1998 by the Government of India. He is the recipient of MRSI Medal for the year 1997 from the Materials Research Society of India.

Dr.Mylswamy Annadurai, popularly known as Moon Man of India, is an Indian scientist working as vice president for Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chairman, Board of Governors, National Design and Research Forum(NDRF). He was born on July 2, 1958, in a village called Kothavadi near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu state of India).Prior to taking this assignment he was with Indian Space Research Organisation and served as director, ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC), Bangalore. During his 36 years of service in ISRO, he had some of the major contributions, including two of the major missions of ISRO, namely Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan. Annadurai has been listed among 100 Global thinkers of 2014 and topped the innovators list. His works are mentioned in textbooks of Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education. | |||

Shri N Rajasekaran, a graduate in Mechanical Engineering is currently working as Dy General Manager of boiler shops, unit II, BHEL. He is a qualified Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) of American Welding Society. He is also having a diploma in Management & PG Dip. in Finance and Operations managements from IGNOU.
As a trainee he worked in Operation, Planning & Control department of Fans group in BHEL, during the training period. He went to Ranipet in the year 1982 and worked in R&D of air pollution control equipments and production departments up to 1996. He involved in the Execution of R&D projects of electrostatic precipitators from concept to commercialization, both at in-house and at sites. He has vast experience in planning & production of Air Pre Heaters, HRSG Pressure parts, Power piping, Pressure vessels, Deaerators, Feed Water tanks, Loco & Bogie frame assemblies, Bunker & TG hall Structures, Chimney, Desalination plant and ash handling plant components, Wind Electric Generators & their structures, etc. He played key role in Indigenization of Nacelle Assembly for Wind Electric generators, Design & Development of 400 mm & 600 mm wide pitch electrode system for the First time in the world, through field demonstrations in working Electrostatic precipitators, etc.
From 1997 to 2013 July he was working in Welding Research Institute. He worked in non-ferrous welding area and fracture mechanics & fatigue testing lab and mechanical testing lab. He has made significant contributions in execution of TIG welding of 7.4 mm thick AA 2219 Aluminum alloys for aero space, and no. of R&D projects including surfacing, bifurcate welding and establishment of Activated TIG. He was incharge of Consultancy activities, Planning & Administration, Machine shop, Systems co-ordination of WRI, besides R&D in gas shielded and solid state welding processes. In the recent past, he has developed automated welding system for hand hole pipe welding, installed gantry robot for transformer tank welding, etc. Worked on automation, robotics, weldability of steels by solid state welding and AUSC boiler materials. He was also working on new technologies like hot wire GTAW, Orbital GMAW, STT / RMD GMAW root passes, SSFCAW, Tip TIG, etc.
Currently he is Dy. General Manager (Boiler Shops), Unit II and in charge of pressure parts manufacturing as per IBR and ASME for sub critical and super critical boilers upto 800 MW capacity involving welding of materials like Grade 91, 92, Super 304 H, etc. He has developed Welding Procedure Specification for GTAW of high wall thick Super 304 H tubes, developed innovative procedure for welding of triple elbows of super critical boilers, etc. He is also working on implementation of new technologies like hot wire GTAW, Orbital GMAW, advanced waveform controlled power sources, SSFCAW, TIP TIG, etc.
He is a qualified internal auditor for ISO 50001 and HSE audit for BHEL. He has presented more than 125 papers in various national & international fora. He has won many times the Best Paper award from INSSAN, Tamil Nadu chapter, Republic Day Award gold medal in 2015, Silver Medal in 2001 and no of productivity project awards. He has been awarded by Lions clubs international, Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam for his contributions to the society. He has been honoured as the MAN OF THE DECADE during the 10th anniversary celebrations for his selfless service to the society. He has been awarded with Meritorious Certificate from the Indian Institute of Metals for his services for the professional body.
He has 31 IPRs in his credit. He has visited United States, Portugal and Japan on official duties.
He is serving as National Secretary of Indian Welding Society & Vice Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Metals, Tiruchirappalli chapter and Computer Society of India, Tiruchy Chapter and National Council member of Indian Institute of Welding. He served as executive committee member of Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing, Tiruchy Chapter for five terms & serving as committee of Institutions of Engineers (India), Tiruchirappalli Local Centre.
During his tenure, as Secretary of CSI Tiruchy chapter the chapter won Best regional chapter award and best newsletter awards for the four times. He also served as Vice President of Tamil Nadu Science Forum, Advisor for Centenary Rotract Club, Syllabus committee member for Periyar Centenary Polytechnic, Thanjavur and serving as Member, Advisory board for Sri Ramakrishna Advanced Technical Institute, Coimbatore and Periyar Maniammai University, Tamil Nadu for rural youth development programme. He is serving as member in Editorial board of IWS Journal from its inception in 2003. He is a visiting faculty for engineering colleges and Examiner for under graduation course at Bharthidasan University. He is doing service as counselor for various polytechnic colleges in Tamil Nadu. He worked on Asian Welding Federation documents and involved in preparation of election procedure for IWS and amendments of MOA of IWS.
He made procedure for qualifying practicing welders by IWS in association with IGNOU and Involved in organizing more than 100 courses on welding at Tiruchirappalli. He initiated efforts to start and sustain the Welding Technology for Fresh Engineers Course of IWS, which is running for the past 14 years at IWS. Interacted with GAIL for conducting corporate programme by IWS. Till date 19 batches were completed successfully. He is instrumental in evolving the concept of Student forum at Engineering colleges and implementation at more number of engg. Colleges. He played key role in development and Updation of IIM, IWS websites as well as website for AWF.
